The racial makeup of the city was 82.81% White, 15.19% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population.

There were 4,630 households out of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 32.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
